Frank Grillo is building up excitement for his new horror movie, Werewolves, set to release this Friday, December 6. The film follows two scientists trying to halt a mutation that turns people into werewolves after a super-moon. It features a star-studded cast and is directed by Steven C. Miller and written by Matthew Kennedy.
In an exclusive interview, Grillo shared that after reading the script, he told the director it was like “The Purge meets werewolves,” specifically comparing it to “The Purge: Anarchy.” Due to the high level of violence, they had to tone down the script to make it less similar to The Purge.
What this means for Werewolves is that Grillo’s prior involvement in The Purge franchise made the tweak necessary as audiences would likely compare the two. However, his claim that fans of certain Purge movies will love Werewolves gives hope for attracting viewers.
While Grillo’s comparison is interesting, the two films seem to have different premises on the surface. The Purge has a political undertone, while werewolves are a more traditional horror element. It’ll be curious to see how they overlap despite the toning down.
