Red One, the action-packed holiday movie directed by Jake Kasdan and starring Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, and J.K. Simmons, has reached a significant box office milestone. It tells the story of the North Pole Head of Security on a high-stakes mission after Santa’s kidnapping. Critics gave it a 30% Rotten Tomatometer score, yet audiences have a 90% approval rating.
Box Office Mojo confirms that Red One has entered the top 25 highest-grossing domestic movies of 2024, surpassing the acclaimed horror film Longlegs with a domestic haul of $75.8 million compared to Longlegs’ $74.3 million. It also beat out other films like Smile 2 and Mean Girls.
What this means for Red One is that it has other achievements too. Thanks to Moana 2, it helped Johnson have two movies in the top 5 domestically last weekend. Its growing list of accomplishments shows it’s not the flop initially reported. With nearly $150 million worldwide and the Christmas season starting, it might maintain its top 25 status.
Despite these milestones, Red One may still lose money as it was produced on a budget estimated over $250 million. The gap between its budget and earnings serves as a reminder that even star-studded movies can be financial risks when budgets are high.
