Will Smith of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” has shared how he disliked the original theme song pitched by Quincy Jones. The sitcom ran from 1990 to 1996 and starred Smith as a Philly teen moving to live with wealthy relatives in LA.
Smith said he couldn’t tell Jones directly that he hated the song due to Jones’ reputation. So, he teamed up with DJ Jazzy Jeff to remix it in a hotel room and then presented the demo to Jones. Jones approved, even calling his own original version “a piece of s—” and agreeing the remix was better.
The remix was a better fit as it was more modern and effectively introduced Smith’s character and the show’s story. It also made the series accessible for new viewers at any point.
Choosing the remix helped the series have a lasting impact. The song is memorable and has been referenced and remixed over the years. Now, with Smith’s story about the original, viewers might be curious to hear what Jones’ initial concept sounded like.
