Daveed Diggs on Not Reprising ‘Hamilton’ Roles

by Barbara Miller

Daveed Diggs has confirmed he does not wish to reprise his roles as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in a potential movie adaptation of Hamilton. In a recent interview discussing his upcoming project Nickel Boys, Diggs shared his thoughts on the possibility of a film version of the hit Broadway musical, which has long been rumored but has yet to be officially confirmed.

While Disney+ released a professionally filmed version of the 2016 Broadway production, speculation continues about a movie adaptation. Diggs explained that the characters he portrayed in Hamilton were much younger than he is now, making a recast for a film more appropriate. He emphasized that age-appropriate casting would be key for the adaptation’s success.

Despite Diggs’ decision not to return in these lead roles, it’s likely that a recast would be well-received by audiences. The original Broadway show has since seen numerous revivals and performances with other actors stepping into the iconic roles. It’s possible Diggs could still make a cameo, much like other stars have in recent musical film adaptations.

While some fans may be disappointed by his refusal, Diggs’ stance makes sense in the context of cinematic realism. With the ongoing popularity of Hamilton and the success of musical adaptations like Wicked, a Hamilton movie remains a strong possibility—and fans may be open to seeing new faces in the roles.
