Nearly a decade after the release of Suicide Squad, director David Ayer remains determined to share his original vision for the film. Despite receiving a largely negative response upon its release, the movie left a lasting impact thanks to standout performances by Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Ayer has frequently cited studio interference as a key factor in altering his intended direction for the film.
In a recent tweet discussing an “Ayer cut,” Ayer addressed criticism from a fan, clarifying that his version differs significantly from the theatrical release. He expressed hope that audiences would see this as an opportunity to experience his true vision.
Ayer’s remarks highlight a broader trend of studio interference in Hollywood, with other high-profile films like Justice League and The Marvels also facing similar issues. According to Ayer, his original cut includes key scenes, such as a pivotal interaction between the Joker and Enchantress, that were removed from the final version.
While the release of Ayer’s cut would likely be a low-cost endeavor, the director remains doubtful that Warner Bros. will pursue it, deferring to the decisions of James Gunn and the studio. Nevertheless, fans have shown significant interest in seeing Ayer’s vision come to life, which could potentially offer a fresh perspective on the 2016 film.
