Tim Miller, the director of the hit 2016 movie “Deadpool”, isn’t giving up on another long-delayed comic book adaptation. Miller, who was an unexpected choice for “Deadpool” initially as he’d mainly worked on shorts or as an assistant director before, managed to turn the $58 million budgeted film into a huge success. It earned great reviews and grossed $782 million at the box office.
Afterward, due to creative differences, he didn’t work on the subsequent Deadpool projects but went on to have a successful career in Hollywood, directing “Terminator: Dark Fate” and serving as an executive producer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and various TV shows, even winning three Primetime Emmy Awards.
However, as of 2024, he has no official projects for 2025 and is now focusing on “The Goon” adaptation. The idea of adapting this comic about an anti-hero goon first emerged in 2008 and had a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012. Miller got attached in 2017, but the project has been stalled since, especially after Disney bought 20th Century Fox and paused or canceled many projects.
At a recent panel, Miller stated firmly, “I will never give up on the Goon movie… I will make it.” Despite his determination, the movie’s potential release comes at an odd time for the superhero genre. It had a trailer way back in 2010, and since then, the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded. With recent superhero movie failures from both Marvel and DC, it might be too late for “The Goon” to make the splash it could’ve years ago.
In conclusion, while Miller’s enthusiasm is admirable, the changing landscape of the superhero genre poses significant challenges for this long-awained adaptation.
