Steven Moffat, co-creator of the hit BBC crime drama “Sherlock”, has added to the speculation about a possible season 5. The show, which ran from 2010 to 2017 and starred Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson, modernized Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective tales with humor and drama.
In an interview, Moffat discussed the prospects of another season. While there are no firm plans, he and fellow creator Mark Gatiss are enthusiastic about revisiting the series. Moffat suggested the idea of showing an older version of Sherlock and John, reasoning that since the format has endured for over a hundred years, it makes sense to continue. He also noted that with an audience eager for more, it seems “madness not to do it”, though he admitted there’s currently no real news on a new season.
What Moffat’s comments mean for season 5 is that the possibility is still alive, despite uncertainties. Producer Sue Vertue had previously spoken optimistically but pointed out the need to align everyone, especially the actors, as both Cumberbatch and Freeman have busy careers now with major roles in other projects.
The broader popularity of Holmesian mysteries, from films to other franchises, also fuels the desire for a new season of “Sherlock”. A potential season 5 could build on the show’s legacy and offer a fresh yet familiar take, similar to past iconic portrayals of the detective.
Moffat’s enthusiasm highlights the series’ lasting power and potential for new stories. Revisiting an older Sherlock and Watson could bring interesting character growth and reignite their on-screen chemistry. While casting is a hurdle, the creators’ passion and audience interest indicate that the door for a return remains open.
