Creators Brian Donovan and Ed Herro have provided an update on the future of “The Sticky” after its first season. The six-episode Prime Video series, which combines crime thriller and comedy elements, premiered in December. Inspired by true events, it follows Ruth Landry, a maple syrup farmer who resorts to crime with the help of a mobster and a security guard for a multi-million dollar maple heist.
In an interview, when asked about the series’ plans, Herro revealed they have a five-season plan laid out. They explained that the original real-life crime was dull, so they spiced it up for the show, envisioning multiple seasons centered around the characters’ growth, conflicts, and how the heist impacts them over time. Donovan added that there’s a wealth of backstory and evolving relationships among characters who’ve known each other for decades that they’re eager to explore.
What this means for season 2 is that the story is set up to continue. Season 1 ended with a cliffhanger, where the heist was successful but with lingering questions about certain characters’ fates. The outlandish nature of the story, despite its loose inspiration from real events, gives the creators room to develop a multi-season arc. However, the show’s renewal will likely hinge on viewership.
“The Sticky” has potential for renewal. With a solid supporting cast including Chris Diamantopoulos and a guest appearance by Jamie Lee Curtis, it could gain buzz through awards recognition for actors like Margo Martindale or make an impact on streaming charts. This would give the creators the opportunity to bring their five-season vision to life.
