The first trailer for the highly anticipated horror sequel “28 Years Later” has been released. Bringing back key figures from the 2002 hit “28 Days Later”, including director Danny Boyle, screenwriter Alex Garland, and actor Cillian Murphy reprising his role as Jim, the film is set to be the first in a new trilogy. The star-studded cast also features Aaron-Taylor Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and others, with Nia DaCosta slated to direct the next installment.
Slated for a June 20, 2025, theatrical release, the trailer gives a glimpse into the movie’s premise. Set three decades after the initial virus outbreak and with a strict quarantine in place, a group of survivors on a small island connected to the mainland by a guarded causeway face new horrors as the virus has mutated, affecting both the infected and other survivors.
The trailer begins deceptively calmly with children watching TV before quickly turning to terror. Taylor-Johnson is frequently shown, often with a younger companion who’s said to be the lead. Comer is seen caring for a child, while Fiennes appears in a distressing state near a bone and skull structure. An interesting and somewhat mysterious shot features a skeletal zombie resembling Murphy, leaving his character’s return and role unclear.
What the trailer reveals is that the situation has worsened compared to the original film. Our take is that it’s an effective trailer as it introduces the new cast and teases what’s to come without giving away too much, which is a common issue with modern movie trailers. It manages to build anticipation while keeping some secrets intact, making viewers eager to see how the story unfolds.
