Liza Lapira’s Take on Voicing Disgust in Inside Out 2

by Barbara Miller

Liza Lapira reveals her approach to voicing Disgust in “Inside Out 2”. The Pixar sequel, nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, introduced new emotions while seeing a change in the voice for Disgust, with Lapira taking over from Mindy Kaling.

In an interview, Lapira said she didn’t aim to mimic Kaling’s voice but focused on capturing Disgust’s essence. She described Disgust as judgmental, protective, and constantly measuring things. She likened the character to someone who always asks to speak to the manager and has a tween-like attitude of deeming things good or not good. Lapira also incorporated a mannerism of checking her hair for split ends, which the director liked and encouraged her to use in her lines.

What Lapira’s approach means for “Inside Out 2” is that she reimagines Disgust as Riley’s protector. Different from Kaling’s portrayal, Lapira’s Disgust has a more self-aware, judgmental tone as Riley deals with high school changes. Thanks to Lapira’s TV background, she can balance the character’s judgment and protection, making it fun and empathetic.

Lapira’s Disgust brings new energy to the movie. Her take on the character is fresh yet stays true to its core, making Disgust more nuanced and relatable as Riley navigates high school. The “split end take” adds a clever touch to the character’s dismissiveness, and her performance effectively shows both Riley’s and Disgust’s emotional journeys while balancing humor and empathy.
