A former Bond girl from Daniel Craig’s era, Gemma Arterton, who played Strawberry Fields in “Quantum of Solace”, has shared her thoughts on the possibility of a female James Bond. With the search on for the next Bond after Craig’s 2021 exit, and Jodie Comer emerging as a contender for a female Bond despite producer Barbara Broccoli’s opposition, Arterton’s perspective adds to the debate.
In an interview, when asked about a female James Bond, Arterton said people would likely find it too outrageous and that sometimes tradition must be respected. She also expressed confusion about her continued association with Bond given her brief on-screen time.
What her comments imply for a female James Bond is that it’s currently unlikely. Many would see it as clashing with the long-established tradition that began with Sean Connery in 1962’s “Dr. No” and Ian Fleming’s 1953 book. While Arterton acknowledges changing gender norms, her stance of respecting tradition reflects a broader resistance to altering such an iconic character.
While a female James Bond might seem overdue, it doesn’t seem likely in the near future due to Broccoli’s firm stance. However, as Bond has adapted over time, there’s a chance that both Broccoli’s view and public opinion could shift, opening the door for a female Bond down the line.
