Idris Elba has shared his thoughts on Knuckles’ future following “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”. Elba first took on the role of the red echidna warrior in “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”, where his character’s arc saw him initially misled by Dr. Robotnik before realizing the truth. He reprised the role in the Paramount+ TV spinoff “Knuckles” in April 2024 and will also have a significant part in the upcoming third theatrical film as part of Team Sonic.
In an interview , Elba expressed openness to returning as Knuckles in future projects. He even joked about being willing to reprise the role in a potential “Sonic the Hedgehog 4” or a second season of “Knuckles”, though there’s currently no official confirmation for such follow-up projects. Additionally, he showed interest in co-starring in a Knuckles and Shadow spinoff with Keanu Reeves.
Looking at the story of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”, it’s set to focus on introducing Shadow and his revenge-driven plot from 50 years ago. While Knuckles will be a primary character, he might not have as prominent a role as before. Still, his continued presence offers opportunities for deeper exploration of his character and connections to other game characters that could be introduced later.
The confirmed two post-credits scenes in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” suggest the franchise is ready to expand further. With more concepts and characters likely on the way, Elba may well have numerous chances to return as Knuckles, potentially even seeing a continuation of his TV show.
Elba’s interest in coming back indicates that the new movie could just be the start of the franchise’s broader expansion. As the release of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is just around the corner, it won’t be long before we get a clearer picture of Knuckles’ place in the series’ future.
