James Gunn’s DC Universe Sets 2026 & 2028 Release Dates for New Movies

by Barbara Miller

Warner Bros. has officially confirmed two new projects within James Gunn’s DC Universe. The DCU officially kicked off with the premiere of “Creature Commandos” in December 2024 and will continue to grow with over a dozen projects in its first chapter, “Gods and Monsters”. While many other movies and shows are in development, Gunn has stated that only those with solid scripts will be announced.

On December 13, 2024, Warner Bros. announced two new DCU movies: “Clayface” and “Dynamic Duo”. “Clayface” will be written by Mike Flanagan, the creator of “The Haunting of Hill House”, and produced by Matt Reeves, the director of “The Batman”, along with Lynn Harris. “Dynamic Duo” is set to be an original animated feature, directed by Arthur Mintz, written by Matthew Aldrich, and also produced by Matt Reeves. “Clayface” is slated for release on September 11, 2026, and “Dynamic Duo” will hit theaters on June 30, 2028.

What these release dates mean is that both movies seem closely connected to other DC projects. The “Clayface” movie aligns well with the “Gods and Monsters” theme, especially as Clayface is making his DCU debut in “Creature Commandos”. Its release in September 2026 is just a month before the current release date of “The Batman – Part II” (October 2, 2026). With Reeves producing both, it’s likely there won’t be any negative impact on either franchise, and there may be no overlap between Gunn’s vision for the character in the DCU and Reeves’ potential adaptation in the “The Batman” franchise.

“Dynamic Duo”, which focuses on Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, currently doesn’t face direct competition. However, Marvel Studios has an untitled MCU project scheduled for May 2028, about a month before “Dynamic Duo’s” release. Given that it centers around the first two Robins, Andy Muschietti’s “The Brave and the Bold” is likely to come out before, perhaps in 2026 or 2027.

These release dates will put a significant focus on Batman’s lore sooner than anticipated. While the announced projects initially seemed to suggest that the DCU would explore A-list heroes’ stories much later, after releases like “Superman” and “The Brave and the Bold”, the announcements of “Clayface” and “Dynamic Duo” indicate an earlier exploration of Batman’s part of the DC Universe. The DCU already has the first, second, and fourth Robins, while Batman’s third Robin, Tim Drake, is yet to be confirmed for any DCU project. It’s possible that more Batman-related projects will be announced closer to “The Brave and the Bold’s” release date, and similar announcements for key characters like Superman and Wonder Woman could also be on the horizon, with their related movies and shows potentially having clear story connections to projects like “Clayface” and “Dynamic Duo”.
