Sarah Michelle Gellar has had a change of heart regarding a return to her role as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as reboot speculation persists. For years, with the prevalence of reboots and revivals in the TV landscape, Gellar had been hesitant about reprising her iconic part. She even joked about being too old and supported the idea of someone else taking on the role.
However, during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show to promote “Dexter: Original Sin” alongside Christian Slater, Gellar showed a more receptive attitude. Citing the success of franchises like Dexter and the revival of “Sex and the City”, she said it made her consider that a Buffy reprise could be viable. She noted that it could be done in various ways and that in the current world, heroes like Buffy are needed more than ever.
What Gellar’s comments could signify for a potential Buffy reboot is that while the project is currently stalled. In 2022, executive producer Gail Berman stated that the reboot was on an indefinite pause. The reboot, initially announced in 2018, had Monica Owusu-Breen lined up as showrunner and Joss Whedon involved as an executive producer and script contributor. But after abuse allegations against Whedon, the project hit a snag. Country music star Dolly Parton has mentioned ongoing efforts, but no details have emerged. Gellar’s new stance might not single-handedly revive the project, but it could potentially reignite interest and get things moving again.
Rebooting Buffy is vast. The Buffy comics have explored many aspects, both well-received and controversial. Despite the series ending over two decades ago and the potential for spinoffs and different slayer-centered stories, there has been minimal progress. Gellar’s openness could be the catalyst that finally jump-starts a long-awaited follow-up.
