Donnie Wahlberg’s Battle for Danny’s Storyline in ‘Blue Bloods’ Finale

by Barbara Miller

The Blue Bloods series finale included a significant storyline for Danny, and Donnie Wahlberg played a key role in making it happen. After 14 years on CBS, the long-running family cop drama came to an end, delivering an emotional farewell to the Reagan family despite some lingering backlash over the network’s decision to cancel the successful series.

In an interview, Wahlberg revealed that he spoke with the show’s higher-ups to ensure there was progress in Danny and Baez’s relationship. He wasn’t pushing for an outright romantic pairing but wanted to leave the impression of a possible future together for the characters, which is exactly what the finale achieved. He also noted that his scene with Len Cariou’s Henry helped solidify the need for Danny and Baez’s breakthrough.

Wahlberg explained, “It was important to Kevin Wade to not have every partnership turn into a relationship. And I respected that, and I agreed with it. I think it was just probably important for me personally that Danny grows… I pushed a lot for some closure with that. I went to Siobhan O’Connor, and I was like, ‘Listen, you’ve got to do something. They don’t need to go get married, but something would be nice, just to show that there may be a future for them, or that their relationship has really evolved.’”

The reason it took so long for Danny and Baez to get together was largely due to Linda. In the early seasons, Danny was married to Linda, and they had a loving family. However, tragedy struck when she was killed, leaving Danny devastated and focused solely on work, with no time for personal romantic arcs beyond his role in the Reagan family. So, it was a poignant moment when he had an epiphany about a potential relationship with Baez after years of being alone.

The idea of Danny and Baez getting together has been a somewhat divisive topic among long-time fans, as Linda and Danny’s relationship was held in such high regard. Still, considering all the time they spent together and how well they complemented each other, Baez seems like an ideal romantic partner for Danny after losing his first wife.

Danny and Baez’s relationship in the Blue Bloods finale is the best ending for Danny. The finale managed to wrap up all the core Reagan family members in a satisfying way. For Danny, the possibility of a romance with Baez after years of working side by side sets up a promising path for the future. While it would have been nice to see their relationship fully develop, given the limited time left for the show, this was a great way to conclude Danny’s story. And perhaps a potential spinoff could provide an update on how their relationship progresses.
