Bryan Tyree Henry is optimistic about the possibility of a sequel to Transformers One and is keen to delve deeper into the foundational events of the impending war for Cybertron. The 2024 animated movie serves as a prequel to the Transformers franchise, depicting how miners Orion Pax (voiced by Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (voiced by Henry) evolved into the iconic leaders Optimus Prime and Megatron respectively. The film also features Scarlett Johansson, Keegan Michael-Key, Jon Hamm, Laurence Fishburne, and Steve Buscemi voicing key characters who played crucial roles in reshaping Cybertron.
Although there’s been no official confirmation of a sequel, Henry expressed his hope for one when speaking. When asked about updates on the potential future of the Transformers animated series, he pointed out that with “Transformers One” in the title, it seemed logical to expect a “Transformers Two”. Moreover, he emphasized his investment in exploring the growing rift between Optimus and Megatron that would set Cybertron on a tragic course, stating, “We still gotta see what happens with Megatron and Optimus.”
What Henry’s response implies for Transformers One’s future is that while there’s fan interest, the movie’s box office performance might leave the chances of a sequel uncertain. The conclusion of Transformers One shows Optimus taking on the role of Autobot leader and achieving the status of a Prime, while Megatron, now exiled, forms the Decepticons with the Cybertronian Royal Guard. Thus, it’s just the first part of a much larger story, as the well-known conflict is yet to fully unfold.
However, despite this setup, the future of the animated franchise remains unclear. Although the movie was well-received by both critics and audiences, it didn’t perform as strongly at the box office. In response, Hasbro has restructured how it finances movie adaptations of its properties. As a result, unless an outside studio steps in to fully fund a sequel, the continuation of Transformers One might not happen.
Our thoughts on Henry’s hopes for a Transformers One sequel are that he’s clearly eager to explore Megatron’s rise. Given the ending and previous comments from director Josh Cooley, it’s evident that ideas for a potential sequel had been considered. But with Hasbro’s recent changes to its filmmaking approach, the theatrical futures of most of its IPs are up in the air, aside from a few already in development. Whether a studio would be willing to take a risk and finance a sequel based on Henry’s enthusiasm and the passionate online fandom is uncertain. Still, Henry’s response might give hope to those interested in seeing where his portrayal of Megatron goes after the events of Transformers One.
