The next installment of the Scream franchise, Scream 7, is set to bring back a significant actor from recent films. The development of the seventh movie has faced some challenges, including the departures of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, as well as director Christopher Landon leaving shortly after being hired, which led to a story overhaul. Now, Neve Campbell will lead the cast as Sidney Prescott, joined by Courteney Cox and new additions like Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Mckenna Grace, and Sam Rechner.
It has reported that Mason Gooding will return to the Scream 7 cast. While a deal has not been officially confirmed, sources state he will reprise his role as Chad Meeks-Martin. However, Jasmin Savoy Brown, who played his sister Mindy in the previous two movies, has not yet signed on for the sequel.
What Gooding’s return means for Scream 7 is that it could help tie up loose plot threads. The departures of Barrera and Ortega have caused controversy among fans, especially since they were supposedly pitched a trilogy for their characters. Gooding’s return can be beneficial in attracting both new and long-time fans, as he is a familiar face from recent movies. It can also provide an explanation for the shift in focus away from Sam and Tara. In Scream VI, the story had to change when Campbell didn’t return, and now Chad’s appearance could account for Tara’s absence, considering they became a couple in the last film. The big question now is whether Brown will return as Mindy, who has carried on Randy’s legacy of explaining horror movie rules. Her return could potentially be set up by Gooding’s comeback.
Gooding’s return to Scream 7 is a welcome development. While Chad didn’t have as much focus as some other characters in previous movies, he was a great addition to the franchise in 2022’s sequel. His return restores excitement for the upcoming installment. The rest of the cast also looks promising, especially with May potentially playing one of Sidney’s children. This confirmation that the story of the previous installments will continue in Scream 7 should ease fans’ concerns that the last two movies will be disregarded. And if Ortega’s career continues to ascend and she decides to return, there’s a possibility she could convince the studio to bring back Barrera, allowing for a proper conclusion to their story arc.
