The prospects for NCIS: Origins’ season 2 look promising based on an update from one of its showrunners. This prequel series focuses on a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs in 1991, during his time at the Naval Investigative Service (NIS) based at Camp Pendleton, before he joined the current NCIS. Despite facing tough competition in the crowded crime drama genre, NCIS: Origins has managed to carve out a place for itself, regularly climbing into the Top 10 charts on Paramount+ soon after each episode airs.
In a recent interview, David J. North, who co-runs the show with Gina Lucita Monreal, provided an upbeat update when asked about the possibility of a second season. Although there’s yet to be an official confirmation from CBS or Paramount+, North’s remarks indicated that the networks are supportive of the series, fueling hopes for it to become a long-running show. He said, “We’re really proud of what we’re making, and the goal is always, obviously, to get as many eyes on it as possible. I know that we’re doing well on Paramount+; after we air, the following day we’re always in the Top 10. I do know that CBS and Paramount are in it for the long haul, so we just try to keep our heads down and write as good of material as possible. And this cast, they’re fantastic, they really are. I think we have something special here, and I hope everybody comes on board.”
What a second season could mean for NCIS: Origins is a promising expansion of the franchise. The series now has the challenging task of distinguishing itself within a long-running franchise that already has numerous popular spin-offs like NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: Hawai’i. However, since NCIS has been on air since 2003, Origins, as a prequel to one of its most beloved characters, holds a unique edge. Its consistent presence in Paramount+’s Top 10 shows that the showrunners’ and cast’s efforts to deliver quality stories and performances have resonated with audiences. While a season 2 isn’t guaranteed, its regular ranking on the streaming platform is a positive sign for renewal.
If renewed, NCIS: Origins season 2 could explore the early cases that shaped the NIS and the real-life events like the Tailhook scandal that led to the creation of NCIS in 1993 in more depth. Moreover, a renewal would solidify its position within the NCIS franchise, allowing fans more time to connect with familiar characters and presenting chances to tell new, real-life-inspired stories. If CBS and Paramount+ are indeed “in it for the long haul”, fans can anticipate more exciting episodes in the future.
The potential renewal of NCIS: Origins has a bright future. It’s always interesting to see a new perspective on a well-loved franchise, and NCIS: Origins has demonstrated its potential to stand alongside its predecessors and compete in the genre. By delving into Gibbs’ early days in law enforcement and introducing fresh stories and characters, it has rejuvenated the NCIS universe. The showrunner’s optimism, along with strong viewership figures, indicates that NCIS: Origins has a promising path ahead. Fans should keep their fingers crossed for a season 2 announcement as they continue to enjoy the current episodes.
