Prime Video Renews ‘Secret Level’ for Season 2 After Record Debut

by Barbara Miller

Prime Video has given the green light to “Secret Level” for a second season, following its remarkable debut. Created by Tim Miller, the creative force behind Netflix’s “Love, Death & Robots”, “Secret Level” is an animated anthology series that breathes life into video game worlds via fifteen individual short stories. It showcases well-known franchises such as Dungeons & Dragons, Pac-Man, Warhammer 40,000, and Sifu, reimagining these games into tales that pay homage to their source material from a distinct perspective. The series also features an impressive voice cast including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kevin Hart, Keanu Reeves, and Laura Bailey.

Prime Video announced the renewal after “Secret Level” achieved the milestone of being the most-watched animated series debut on the platform. According to Luminate, the animated series garnered around 1.4 million views within its first week. However, specific details about season 2 are yet to be disclosed.

What the renewal of “Secret Level” season 2 implies is that Prime Video is strengthening its focus on video game adaptations. This aligns with the success of other projects like the 2024 series “Fallout” and the growing excitement for the upcoming “Tomb Raider” reboot with Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The anthology format of “Secret Level” provides great creative freedom, enabling different writers, animators, and directors to reinvent video game franchises in novel and often unforeseen ways, as seen with the unique take on Pac-Man.

Executive producers Miller and Dave Wilson have dropped hints about their ambitious plans for season 2, which include the possibility of a Pong episode and a Fortnite adaptation that Miller described as “the Moby Dick of video games”. Their eagerness to handle games from basic classics to contemporary blockbusters showcases the anthology’s potential to expand in both scope and appeal. Given that “Secret Level” already has collaborations with major developers like Sony (Concord) and Epic Games (Unreal Tournament), season 2 might involve partnerships with more studios, potentially opening the door for adaptations of games like Elden Ring, Call of Duty, or other popular titles.

The renewal of “Secret Level” season 2 is excellent news for both gamers and fans of creative storytelling. Miller and Wilson’s work has demonstrated that even simple games like Pac-Man can give rise to unique and imaginative adaptations. From reimagining nostalgic classics to modern hits, the second season of this animated series is a promising addition to Prime Video’s animated offerings. With its creative approach and connections to major studios, “Secret Level” can continue to honor gaming’s rich history while pushing the boundaries of animation and television.
