Amy Adams’ The Office Cameo Nearly Derailed by Casting Concern

by Barbara Miller

Amy Adams’ appearance on the American version of “The Office” was almost a no-go due to a casting concern within the creative team. The show, which was a mockumentary based on the BBC series of the same name, focused on the everyday happenings at Dunder Mifflin, a paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It aired for nine seasons on NBC from 2005 to 2013, won five Emmys, and remains a beloved and iconic series, especially with its extended episodes available on Peacock. Adams played Katy Moore, a salesperson who visited the office to sell purses and ended up in a romantic relationship with Jim (John Krasinski) that lasted through season 2.

On an episode of the “Office Ladies” podcast hosted by “The Office” alums Jenna Fischer (Pam) and Angela Kinsey, it was disclosed that Adams wasn’t the initial choice for the role. Fischer revealed that they had filmed an entire day’s worth of footage with another actress in the part of Katy. However, after determining that the first actress wasn’t the right fit, she was replaced by Adams. Fischer said, “We originally shot ‘Hot Girl’ for an entire day with a completely different actress in the role of Katy. And unfortunately, she just wasn’t quite right for the role. They had to let her go. We replaced her with Amy.”

Adams quickly showed a natural affinity for the role, as Fischer noted that “she was so seamlessly Katy” and that she improvised a lot, with many of her improvised moments making it into the final cut. But the creative team had reservations about casting Adams because of her resemblance to Fischer. One writer even commented, “I’m sorry. We can’t cast her. She’s like Jenna 2.0.” This led them to have second thoughts before finally deciding to cast Adams.

What this means for “The Office” is that it reignites speculation about Jim. The similarity between Fischer and Adams plays into the storyline in an interesting way, as Jim starts dating Katy. Even Michael noticed the resemblance, referring to Katy as “Pam 6.0.” When the episode first aired in 2005, many viewers wondered if Jim was attracted to Katy because she looked like Pam.

Sadly, the relationship didn’t last long, as Jim broke up with Katy. Adams didn’t reprise her role in season 2 due to her busy schedule at the time, as she was working on projects like “The Fighter” and “The Muppets”. Nevertheless, she sent a letter to the cast expressing how much she enjoyed filming for the show.

Amy Adams’ cameo in “The Office” was nice to see her in the series, even if only briefly. When first watching the show, it seemed like Adams was cast because of her likeness to Fischer’s Pam, so it was surprising to learn that was almost the reason she didn’t get the part. Thankfully, the creative team went with Adams in the end. Despite having a small role, she fit in perfectly and has since gone on to have an accomplished career outside the show, including six Oscar nominations.
