As the return of “1923” approaches, Michelle Randolph has offered some enticing hints about what’s to come in season 2. The Dutton family’s trials and tribulations have been a driving force behind creator Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone”, though that series’ future is uncertain after parting ways with Kevin Costner’s John Dutton. Meanwhile, “1923” season 2 is set to fill the void as “Yellowstone” wraps up its eventful season 5, with the spinoff’s new season premiering on Paramount+ on February 23.
Randolph, who portrays Elizabeth Strafford and is among the returning characters, teased during an interview with ScreenRant about “Landman” that season 2 will feature “really great” storytelling. She lamented that audiences will be “very sad” they can’t binge-watch the new season all at once, saying, “It’s gonna be a really great season. Season 2 was incredible, but with two years in between, I was so excited. I just read straight through the scripts, and I think people are going to be very sad that they can’t binge-watch the season, because every episode leaves you on the edge of your seat.”
Randolph also addressed the fan theories regarding Elizabeth’s possible connection to Costner’s Dutton character. She cautiously denied having knowledge about her character’s place in the Dutton family tree, expressing worry about accidentally spoiling things. She noted that inquiries about her ties to the family tree are the “No. 1 question I get asked” and opted to play coy, stating, “I may or may not know. You know, you’ve just got to watch and find out what happens. It’s so much easier to just say I don’t know anything. No, I’m terrified. [Chuckles] That’s the No. 1 question I get asked, and I just, I know nothing.”
What this means for “1923” season 2 and Elizabeth’s storyline is that the mystery surrounding John Dutton III’s lineage remains intact. Randolph has no answers about whether Elizabeth could be the grandmother of the “Yellowstone” character, and that’s in line with how series creator Sheridan wants it. Randolph previously explained in a 2023 interview that there’s a lot of “back and forth” among the cast regarding the answer, but Sheridan keeps it under wraps.
In season 1, Elizabeth’s story ended tragically as she miscarried the baby she had with Jack Dutton. Additionally, big changes are occurring at the ranch, with Whitfield now holding the deed and putting Jacob and Cara in his debt. There’s also the ongoing saga of Spencer and Alex, who are separately making their way to Montana after Spencer accidentally killed Alex’s ex-fiancée.
The theories about Elizabeth being John Dutton’s grandmother can be fun, they ultimately don’t hold much significance for “1923”. There are multiple candidates who could potentially be John Dutton III’s grandfather, such as Elizabeth’s fiancé, Jack Dutton, and the absent Spencer Dutton. Season 1 initially seemed to suggest a connection with Elizabeth’s pregnancy before her marriage to Jack, but the miscarriage threw that into question. Now it’s unclear if she can have children or if she and Jack will marry at all.
Sheridan appears to enjoy keeping the Dutton family tree mysterious, which is a clever strategy for engaging fans. He’s sure to keep audiences guessing throughout “1923” season 2 and in any future “Yellowstone” spinoffs. “1923” is slated to conclude with season 2, and while the speculation about the Dutton lineage is entertaining, what truly matters is the drama that Sheridan is so adept at creating. It’s possible Sheridan himself hasn’t decided who will be the father of “Yellowstone’s” John Dutton, and it could be years before the mystery is resolved.
