A24 has successfully acquired the United States distribution rights to the upcoming psychological thriller “Victorian Psycho”. Adapted from Virginia Feito’s novel of the same name, the film will revolve around an eccentric governess who arrives at a remote Gothic manor, where a series of strange happenings give rise to suspicion. Margaret Qualley, known for her role in “The Substance”, is set to lead the cast, and Thomasin McKenzie, who starred in “Last Night in Soho”, joined the project in November 2024.
A24 emerged victorious in the bidding war for the domestic rights of “Victorian Psycho”. Additionally, it’s reported that filming for this period psychological thriller is scheduled to commence in March 2025, although no release date has been determined as of now. The international rights for the movie are held by the production company Anton, which is also fully financing the project.
What this means for “Victorian Psycho” is that the movie aligns with both A24’s and its stars’ genre tendencies. A24’s decision to obtain the rights to this film reflects the studio’s ongoing fascination with the psychological thriller genre. While many aspects of the film and its production are still in the works, the premise indicates a focus on psychological elements combined with a Gothic ambiance. A24 has a reputation for backing projects that explore unique stories, and this acquisition showcases its dedication to expanding its collection of genre-driven movies.
Looking back at A24’s early days, it frequently delved into the realm of psychological thrillers, such as the Scarlett Johansson-led “Under the Skin” and Denis Villeneuve’s “Enemy”. In the past decade, the studio has received widespread acclaim for numerous other titles in the genre, including the recently released “Heretic”, for which Hugh Grant has earned a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of the villainous Mr. Reed.
For Qualley, “Victorian Psycho” presents another chance for her to showcase her talent in complex, character-driven roles. Qualley, who has recently been seen in projects like “The Substance” and “Drive Away Dolls”, has cultivated a reputation for playing distinctive characters. Her experience in a variety of nuanced roles positions her well to deliver a remarkable performance in “Victorian Psycho”.
A24 securing “Victorian Psycho” reaffirms the studio’s clear commitment to the psychological thriller genre. With production slated to start in 2025 and the possibility of a 2026 release, this film could further solidify the studio’s standing for developing projects with engaging storylines. As A24 continues to search for films with original concepts, “Victorian Psycho” may prove crucial in influencing the studio’s future releases.
