The Mandalorian & Grogu Finishes Production, Set for 2026 Release

by Barbara Miller

Star Wars has officially announced that production on “The Mandalorian & Grogu” has been completed, and it’s locked in for a May 22, 2026, release. As the next Star Wars movie on the horizon, it’s already generating a great deal of excitement, especially since it’s a spin-off of one of the franchise’s most popular TV shows and the first Star Wars movie in several years.

There’s been much uncertainty regarding the future of Star Wars lately. While there were previously numerous shows and movies in development, the status of many remains unclear at present. However, “The Mandalorian & Grogu” appears to be right on schedule. According to a recent year-in-review report from Star Wars, “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have completed production on The Mandalorian and Grogu, the first Star Wars theatrical release since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and we couldn’t be happier to see Din Djarin and Grogu fire up a jetpack and head to theaters. The feature film will star Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver, and the glimpse we got at D23 promises other familiar faces including Zeb Orrelios and a gaggle of Anzellans. Sorry, 2025, but we’re already eyeing May 22, 2026.”

What this update on “The Mandalorian & Grogu” means for Star Wars is that it’s precisely the news the fanbase needed. Star Wars’ recent history has left even its most devoted fans feeling somewhat unsure about the franchise’s direction. Currently, the upcoming shows are limited to “Andor” season 2 and “Ahsoka” season 2, and among the in-development movies, only “The Mandalorian & Grogu” has a confirmed release date. This sparse lineup follows other unexpected decisions, like the cancellation of “The Acolyte”.

The news that “The Mandalorian & Grogu” has wrapped production provides reassurance that the future of Star Wars is still bright and comes at an opportune time. While Star Wars announcements might be relatively quiet in the next few months as Star Wars Celebration 2025 is set for April and will likely feature major announcements, this end-of-year update on the movie will tide audiences over until more news about new shows and movies arrives.

“The Mandalorian & Grogu” finishing production ushers in a new era for Star Wars that’s worth looking forward to. As highlighted on Star Wars’ official website, it’s the franchise’s first movie release since “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019. Moreover, it’s the first instance of a Star Wars show transitioning to the big screen.

The movie will also bring back several fan-favorite characters, not just the titular Din Djarin and Grogu, but also well-loved figures from other Star Wars shows, like Zeb Orrelios from “Star Wars Rebels”. Additionally, it represents a departure from the Skywalker Saga and the heavy focus on the Jedi and Sith in previous Star Wars movies. While the news of its production completion might seem like a small detail, it’s actually a significant update that bodes well for an exciting future for the Star Wars franchise.
