A24 has unveiled a series of stills from the film “The Brutalist”, directed by Brady Corbett and featuring an ensemble cast that includes Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, Stacy Martin, Joe Alwyn, and Alejandro Nivola.
This postwar epic centers around Laszlo Toth (Adrien Brody), a Hungarian-born Jewish architect, and his wife Elzbert (Felicity Jones). After fleeing Europe following World War II, they make their way to the United States to rebuild their careers and witness the birth of modern America. However, their lives take a turn when they encounter a mysterious and wealthy client, Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce). Toth receives a contract from him that will have a profound impact on his life for the next 30 years.
Over the weekend, “The Brutalist” opened in just four theaters in New York and Los Angeles. Despite having a runtime of 215 minutes, plus an additional 15 minutes of intermissions, it managed to sell out nearly 30 shows during the three-day weekend. The film grossed $266,800 in total and had an opening gross of $66,700, achieving a record that is second only to “Anola” and “The Kind”.
“The Brutalist” received a 13-minute standing ovation after its premiere in Venice. Many critics have lauded it as “a masterpiece of American epic”, comparing it favorably to historical classics like “There Will Be Blood”, “Once Upon a Time in America”, and “The Godfather”. Set in postwar America in the middle of the last century, the film has surprisingly managed to attract a young audience. In this limited release, those under the age of 35 have emerged as the main viewership group.
