Marvel Exec Addresses Ms. Marvel’s MCU Future After Young Avengers Setup

by Barbara Miller

Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum has offered a tantalizing tease regarding the future of Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iman Vellani brought the character to life in her MCU debut in the Disney+ series “Ms. Marvel”. She then reprised the role in the 2023 movie “The Marvels”, where Kamala joined forces with Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Monica Rambeau/Photon (Teyonah Parris). In one of the post-credits scenes of “The Marvels”, Kamala met with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) from “Hawkeye”, laying further groundwork for the formation of the Young Avengers in the MCU.

In an interview, Winderbaum affirmed that Ms. Marvel continues to hold a significant place in the MCU and is very much “top of mind” as the franchise evolves. He stressed that the “Ms. Marvel” series is especially crucial, though he couldn’t divulge the specific reasons, as it would spoil upcoming projects. Winderbaum also shared his excitement about seeing where Ms. Marvel will pop up next in the MCU. Here’s what he said:

“I love Iman. She’s incredible. I love that character. I will tell you that she’s certainly a big part of the MCU to me. Ms. Marvel is a really important show to us, and without going into great detail, because I don’t want to spoil anything, she is top of mind. So it’s going to be exciting to see where she pops up next.”

What Winderbaum’s comments about Ms. Marvel’s MCU future imply is that she’s poised to return in a major way, but the specific plans are being kept tightly under wraps. Vellani is set to be part of the cast for “Marvel Zombies”, though that animated series exists in an alternate timeline. Given Winderbaum’s emphasis on the importance of the “Ms. Marvel” series and the character herself, it suggests that other storylines with her in a key role are in the works. Movies like “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”, which are expected to feature a vast array of heroes, are among the possible platforms for her return.

Another likely scenario is the realization of a Young Avengers movie or television series. This would fulfill the setup from the scene between Ms. Marvel and Kate Bishop at the end of “The Marvels”, along with all the other potential Young Avengers members who have been introduced across various MCU projects. Since this project hasn’t been officially greenlit yet, it could explain why Winderbaum is unable to disclose details about where Kamala’s story is headed.

Our take on Winderbaum’s comments about Ms. Marvel’s MCU future is that she needs to make a comeback sooner rather than later. Ms. Marvel and Kate Bishop are two of the standout characters introduced during the Multiverse Saga. A Young Avengers movie or TV series would be an ideal way to continue their stories. “Ms. Marvel” remains one of the MCU’s most well-received shows, with Vellani earning praise for her performances in both the series and “The Marvels”. The MCU should make sure it continues to leverage one of its best characters and one of its most talented actors and not keep Ms. Marvel on the sidelines for an extended period.
