Shrinking’s Season 4 in Question Despite Initial 3-Season Plan

by Barbara Miller

Shrinking, the Apple TV+ series co-created by Bill Lawrence, has had its future beyond the initially envisioned three-season run brought into focus. Apple TV+ demonstrated significant confidence in the show by renewing Shrinking for season 3 even before the second season premiered. This series, much like Lawrence’s other creation Ted Lasso on the same platform, was originally conceived as a story with a three-part structure.

Following the Shrinking season 2 finale, co-creator Bill Lawrence addressed the show’s potential continuation. He confirmed that the series doesn’t necessarily have to conclude with season 3. Along with Jason Segel and Brett Goldstein, Lawrence developed the show, and he stated that if Apple is keen on producing more episodes, they’ll devise a new story arc. As he put it, “If we’re lucky enough and Apple seems excited to keep making the show, we’ll come up with a new story.”

What do Lawrence’s comments imply for Shrinking? Well, the show’s premise actually lends itself well to multiple seasons. After the conclusion of season 2, there are several narrative paths that could be explored. For instance, Dr. Paul Rhoades (played by Harrison Ford) is dealing with his deteriorating health, while Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel) is on a journey of personal growth as he mourns the loss of his wife. The second season delved into themes of forgiveness and moving forward, and while season 3, which is slated to start production in February, might tie up some of these threads, the series has the potential to progress further. In fact, it has already started evolving in different ways.

The series has developed a unique identity as a “hangout show”. Viewers tune in because they enjoy spending time with its charming and relatable characters. As long as the show maintains its focus on therapy, which has been a core aspect from the start, there’s no inherent reason why this Emmy-nominated series can’t continue for additional installments.

Lawrence’s comments regarding Shrinking season 4 is cleverly sidesteps an issue that Ted Lasso has faced. Ted Lasso’s uncertainty around a fourth season stems from the initial plan to conclude after a set number of seasons. While that might have been an admirable intention, the problem arises as the cast and crew have repeatedly expressed their eagerness to continue, and reports suggest Apple is making efforts to greenlight another season. In contrast, Shrinking has a clear stance from its co-creator, who has openly stated his willingness to develop more content if Apple gives the go-ahead, thus avoiding the ambiguity and potential disappointment that Ted Lasso has encountered.
