Tyler Perry, renowned for creating the Madea franchise and playing the lead role in those comedic films, has seen his new Netflix movie achieve streaming success despite receiving a somewhat mixed critical response. Perry’s works have often sparked divided opinions among critics, yet they’ve managed to enjoy significant mainstream popularity, with the Madea movies being just one aspect of his extensive body of work.
He first gained acclaim with the 2005 movie “Diary of a Mad Black Woman”, which he wrote and adapted from his stage play. His long-running series “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne”, which aired for eight seasons on TBS, also contributed to his reputation. Besides his work in the Madea franchise, Perry has had roles in various notable films, such as J.J. Abrams’ 2009 “Star Trek”, David Fincher’s 2014 adaptation of “Gone Girl”, and Adam McKay’s 2021 satirical movie “Don’t Look Up”, which was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.
Tyler Perry’s “The Six Triple Eight” has emerged as a streaming hit. Directed by Perry himself, the movie is based on a remarkable true story from World War II. It showcases the efforts of the all-Black and all-female 6888th battalion, which managed to sort through millions of backlogged pieces of mail in less than 90 days. Starring “Scandal” star Kerry Washington, the movie has drawn a mix of reviews. Currently, it holds a 50% Tomatometer score and a 73% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to Netflix’s Global Top 10, “The Six Triple Eight” is the second most-watched movie on the platform in the past week, debuting with 14.3 million views. The only movie that outperformed it was “Carry-On”, an action thriller starring Taron Egerton that amassed an impressive 55.1 million views in its second week on the streaming service. “The Six Triple Eight” has made it into Netflix’s Top 10 in 75 countries worldwide and has even surpassed numerous Christmas movies, including “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch”, during the Christmas week.
“The Six Triple Eight’s” streaming success serves as a reminder that critical acclaim doesn’t always translate to high viewership. Many of the most-watched movies on Netflix have had mixed or even negative reviews. The story told in “The Six Triple Eight”, especially its inspiring ending, highlights an overlooked aspect of World War II history. Tyler Perry aimed to give this story more exposure through the movie, and based on the initial viewership numbers, it’s clear that he’s already achieving that goal.
