Kingsman Star’s Netflix Thriller Nears All-Time Viewership Record at No. 1

by Barbara Miller

Taron Egerton, known for his role as Gary “Eggsy” Unwin in the Kingsman franchise, is starring in a Netflix action thriller that’s on the brink of shattering an all-time viewership record. Egerton first gained fame through his appearances in “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and “Kingsman: The Golden Circle”. In between these action-comedy installments, he also lent his voice to the teenage gorilla Johnny in the 2016 animated movie “Sing” and reprised the role in its 2021 sequel “Sing 2”.

However, Egerton’s most lauded performance is widely regarded to be in “Rocketman”, where he played music legend Elton John in the 2019 biopic. The film received critical acclaim and earned Egerton a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. Besides his work in feature films, he voiced the Gelfling hero Rian in the unfortunately canceled Netflix series “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” and took on the role of Jimmy Keene in the miniseries “Black Bird”, which led to an Emmy Award nomination for him.

The Netflix movie in question, “Carry-On”, has become a streaming sensation. In this 2024 action thriller, Egerton portrays Ethan Kopek, a TSA agent who must outwit a traveler (Jason Bateman) who’s blackmailing him. The cast also features Sofia Carson from “Descendants”, Dean Norris from “Breaking Bad”, Danielle Deadwyler from “Station Eleven”, and Sinqua Walls from “Once Upon A Time”. “Carry-On” has received mixed reviews, with an 87% Tomatometer score and 55% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.

According to Netflix’s Global Top 10, “Carry-On” has held the top spot as the streamer’s most-watched movie for two consecutive weeks. It has accumulated 97 million views in its first ten days, putting it on a trajectory to enter Netflix’s list of 10 most-watched movies of all time. Currently, Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” occupies the tenth position on that list, having garnered 136.6 million views in its first month. Other movies like Jennifer Lopez’s “The Mother”, the children’s superhero movie “We Can Be Heroes”, and Millie Bobby Brown’s “Damsel” are just slightly ahead.

“Carry-On’s” streaming success is likely to soon join the all-time top 10. Given the pace at which it’s been racking up views in its first ten days, it won’t be long before it secures that coveted position. Despite the disparity between the reviews from critics and general audiences, this hasn’t hindered its streaming viewership. This is in line with the trend seen in many of Netflix’s most-watched movies. With Taron Egerton in the lead, “Carry-On” continues to be one of Netflix’s biggest movies and is steadily attracting more viewers.
