Disney’s ‘Treasure Island’ Movie in Development with a Fresh Twist

by Barbara Miller

Disney is currently working on a new adaptation of the classic tale “Treasure Island”, and this time, it comes with a surprising twist. The story by Robert Louis Stevenson has seen over 50 film and television adaptations throughout the years. Disney itself has had several takes on this pirate narrative, including the 1950 “Treasure Island”, the animated science-fiction spin “Treasure Planet”, and the much-loved “Muppet Treasure Island”. However, an indie filmmaking duo now has a unique perspective on the source material.

A new version of “Treasure Island” is in its early development stages, with the writing and directing team of Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz, known as Los Frikis. When questioned about the shift from indie projects to working on a major studio film like this, Schwartz confirmed that they’re “working on Treasure Island for Disney”. He described it as “an Australian surfer version of Treasure Island” and didn’t seem entirely certain that the adaptation would come to fruition, using the phrase “if they ever make it”. Here’s what he said:

“Schwartz: We’re working on Treasure Island for Disney. It’s an Australian surfer version of Treasure Island, and if they ever make it, it would be so fun. It has the vibes that we do, and there’s found family, brotherhood, drama and outsider energy.

Nilson: It has the patina of the 1970s surf world. It’s all there.”

What this means for the “Treasure Island” adaptation is that it’s still very much in its infancy. This news follows years of speculation that Disney would remake their 2002 film “Treasure Planet” as a live-action feature. After all, Disney has been focusing on remaking many of its classic animated films such as “Mulan”, “Cinderella”, and “Beauty and the Beast” into live-action versions. “Treasure Planet” was a popular adaptation of “Treasure Island” with engaging sci-fi elements that made it a prime candidate for a remake. But now, instead of delving back into the space-themed take, this new adaptation will head in the direction of the 1970s.

While the script for this “Treasure Island” adaptation is being written, it appears that the film’s production isn’t guaranteed. Moreover, it won’t be the live-action “Treasure Planet” remake that had been rumored. Although the animated “Treasure Planet” was also based on the same source material, it seems this new version will interpret the story in a distinct way with its “Australian surfer” concept.

This premise for the “Treasure Island” adaptation has the potential to be a truly unique film. If Schwartz and Nilson can maintain the Australian surfer framework for “Treasure Island”, it could result in a captivating movie. One of the attractions of “Treasure Island” as a story is the numerous ways in which this classic historical fiction has been reimagined over time. Incorporating surfing as a central element would offer a novel approach to Stevenson’s text, providing a refreshing variation to the franchise and deviating from Disney’s more typical live-action remake formula.
