$261M Terminator: Dark Fate Finds Redemption on Netflix’s Global Chart

by Barbara Miller

The Terminator franchise, which has spanned six movies and two television series since its debut in 1984, has seen one of its biggest commercial letdowns find new life on Netflix. The first film, directed and written by James Cameron, laid the groundwork for the franchise, introducing Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator and establishing the iconic characters of Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese.

“Terminator 2: Judgment Day” is widely regarded as the franchise’s finest offering and one of the greatest movie sequels of all time. However, the movies released between 2003 and 2019 failed to match the acclaim of those initial two installments. The franchise also expanded to television with “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” airing from 2008 – 2009, and more recently, “Terminator Zero”, an anime series that premiered on Netflix in 2024.

“Terminator: Dark Fate”, released in 2019, is now enjoying streaming success. This movie brought Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, who plays Sarah Connor, back together for the first time since “Terminator 2” in 1991. While its reviews were better than those for “Terminator Salvation” and “Terminator Genisys”, it didn’t quite manage to recapture the magic of the first two films and fell short of expectations. Commercially, it was a disappointment, grossing only $261 million against a budget close to $200 million.

James Cameron served as a producer on “Terminator: Dark Fate”. According to Netflix’s Global Top 10, it has now become a streaming hit, ranking as the eighth most-watched movie in the past week with 5.8 million views. It’s in the top 10 in 57 countries worldwide, with many of its best-performing regions in Europe, such as Spain, Finland, France, Italy, Serbia, and Sweden. Notably, it’s not currently available to stream in the United States.

Terminator’s streaming success is a positive sign for the franchise’s future. Despite its failure to shine at the box office, the global streaming viewership shows that “Terminator: Dark Fate” is reaching a wider audience now. This is especially promising as Cameron is working on a script for “Terminator 7”. If this level of interest in the franchise persists, the next installment could perform well both internationally and globally at the box office. Moreover, regardless of what lies ahead for “Terminator 7”, the success of “Terminator Zero” on Netflix has already sparked renewed interest in the franchise, which has translated into viewership for “Terminator: Dark Fate”.
