“Wicked” has achieved a significant milestone by becoming one of the 50 highest-grossing movies of all time at the domestic box office in the United States. Since its debut on November 22, the highly anticipated adaptation of the Broadway musical has been a huge box office success. Its record-breaking numbers have not only made it the highest-grossing movie adaptation of a Broadway musical ever but also positioned it as the third highest-grossing movie of 2024 at the domestic box office, trailing only behind “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine”.
“Wicked” has now raked in $392.4 million domestically, allowing it to surpass the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 2019 movie “Spider-Man: Far From Home” starring Tom Holland, which previously held the 49th spot with $391.4 million. “Wicked” is now closing in on the 48th position, occupied by another musical, Disney’s 2013 “Frozen”, which has a domestic box office total of $401 million.
What this means for “Wicked’s” box office performance is that it will continue to climb the all-time domestic box office charts. Even in its fifth week in theaters, the musical adaptation is still performing strongly at the box office and will soon overtake “Frozen” and other films with domestic totals in the lower $400 million range. While it’s unlikely that “Wicked” will catch up to the two 2024 movies ahead of it before its theatrical run concludes in early 2025, it remains to be seen just how close it can get. Nevertheless, “Wicked” has undeniably been a box office triumph and is the highest-grossing non-sequel movie of 2024 at the domestic box office. This success bodes well for the release of “Wicked: For Good”, with the second installment poised to be one of the top-performing movies in 2025.
“Wicked’s” new box office milestone should prompt studios to reevaluate how they market movie musicals. “Wicked’s” financial success serves as evidence of just how well a high-quality movie musical can fare at the box office. In recent years, studios have been hesitant to market movies as musicals, as seen with films like “Wonka”, “Mean Girls”, and even in the early marketing of “Wicked” itself. However, by delivering some of the most outstanding musical numbers in movie history, “Wicked” has demonstrated that movie musicals can not only be box office hits but can also outperform numerous non-musical movies. Hopefully, this will lead to a change in how studios approach the marketing of movie musicals in the future.
