There’s a new update on the story for Ted Lasso season 4, courtesy of co-creator Bill Lawrence. More than a year has passed since the soccer dramedy concluded its third season. In August, reports emerged that efforts were underway to get season 4 off the ground. Warner Bros. TV, the studio behind the hit Apple TV+ series, was said to be reaching out to the actors to check their availability and aiming to set up a writers’ room. However, both the executives at WB TV and the cast and crew have been hesitant to officially confirm if the show will indeed return.
In an interview, where Lawrence was discussing some of his recent TV projects, including the Shrinking season 2 finale, he offered the most straightforward response yet regarding season 4. The veteran writer, who developed Ted Lasso alongside Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly, made it clear that Sudeikis is the main creative force behind the show and will be the one to disclose what’s next. Nevertheless, Lawrence described Ted Lasso season 4 as a “self-reboot” and didn’t deny that it’s in the works. Here’s what he said:
“I’m always very careful to make sure it never comes out on my mouth like it’s my show, because I’m so proud to be part of it. But Jason’s the guy driving the wheel on that. But the one thing that he was always very clear about, without divulging anything, is that the story that we came up with for the first three seasons was “Ted Lasso” had a beginning, middle and end; without a doubt it had an end, you saw him jumping around and go home. It helped cement my thoughts and I don’t want to speak for him, but it’d be interesting to see that there’s always another story to tell with characters that people like, but it’s a different story. It’s almost a self-reboot. I think that he [Jason] always had in his head another story he wanted to tell.”
What Lawrence’s comments might imply for Ted Lasso is that it’s set for a fresh start. Similar to Shrinking, Ted Lasso was initially envisioned as a three-part story. By the end of season 3, Ted’s narrative concluded as he went back to the U.S. to be with his family. Lawrence’s remarks could suggest that, as has been speculated, Sudeikis’ character, Coach Lasso, might take a backseat in season 4, with the focus shifting to a women’s soccer team. Alternatively, it could mean that while the spotlight remains on the central AFC Richmond team, Lasso won’t be the main focus anymore.
Since the initial report about Warner Bros. TV’s attempts to make season 4 happen, there hasn’t been much progress in determining what the future of the series will entail. It’s known that Phil Dunster likely won’t return as a main cast member due to his commitments to other shows, though he could still make guest appearances. Lawrence’s comments emphasize that the show’s next chapter won’t be a simple continuation of what’s come before but rather a new concept.
Ted Lasso season 4 is the details truly matter. Ted Lasso has been one of the most popular streaming shows, even ranking as Nielsen’s most-watched series at one point. It’s understandable that both WB and Apple executives would be eager for new episodes. Hopefully, after the holidays, there will finally be some concrete information about what the next iteration of this Emmy-winning series will actually look like.
