‘Bad Sisters’ Season 3 Draws Doubtful Response from Star Sharon Horgan

by Barbara Miller

The possibility of a third season for “Bad Sisters” has received a rather doubtful response from star and co-creator Sharon Horgan. The series, developed by Horgan along with Dave Finkel and Brett Baer, is set in Dublin and follows Eva Garvey (Horgan) and her sisters as they become embroiled in a life insurance investigation after the mysterious death of her brother-in-law. “Bad Sisters” season 2 recently concluded its run on Apple TV+, depicting the sisters getting caught up in yet another perilous situation.

In an interview following the season 2 finale, alongside executive producer Dearbhla Walsh, Horgan addressed the likelihood of returning for another season of the acclaimed Apple TV+ comedy. Horgan brought up anthology dramas like HBO’s “The White Lotus” and Netflix’s “Beef”, expressing doubts that the Garvey sisters could believably find themselves in another dangerous situation once again. Walsh chimed in with a joking comment about how many more people the main characters could kill. Here’s what they said:

Horgan: “You have shows like White Lotus, and I guess Beef is doing it, where you can start again with a whole new cast, and so you can go for it. But with these sisters, you have to believe that they can be in that situation again. Because the reason why the show works is because people believe their situation, and we could do what we wanted this time around, because it’s all the fallout of what happened in the first season,” Horgan said.

Horgan: “I’m thinking all the time, and let’s see what happens. But that’s the tricky thing of it. You’ve got to really, really believe it could happen to these women again.”

What Horgan’s comments imply for “Bad Sisters” season 3 is that it’s a difficult balancing act. The second season managed to avoid the issue of believability as it continued the narrative from the first season. It picked up two years after the season 1 ending, with the sisters aiming to start anew but instead finding themselves in another situation where they were questioned by the authorities. Horgan also mentioned in the same interview that the idea for season 2 emerged during the making of the first installment, centered around Grace (Anne-Marie Duff) being unable to break free from the cycle of abuse.

The show, which also features Eva Birthistle, Sarah Greene, and Eve Hewson, concluded its second season with a sense of closure. There was a significant death that changed the game, and the season’s villain, revealed late in the story, was dealt with. So, it wasn’t just an end for season 2 but potentially for the entire dark comedy series. Revisiting the same concepts and themes with the same characters would stretch the limits of credibility, though that’s not the sole factor influencing the show’s future.

“Bad Sisters” season 3 is a tough call. Compared to the widespread acclaim of its first season, season 2 received somewhat more muted reviews. While it was still quite solid overall, there was a general consensus that the show’s return didn’t quite recapture the initial magic it had. Horgan’s comments recognize this dilemma as well. However, if there’s sufficient viewership and interest, there might be a temptation to attempt a third season, provided the co-creator doesn’t completely rule it out.
