Homestead’s Box Office: Modest Start for Yellowstone Star’s Thriller

by Barbara Miller

“Homestead” has gotten off to a rather unassuming start at the box office, though it’s still managing to hold its own to some extent. Set in a post-apocalyptic America, the movie centers around Neal McDonough’s character, Ian Ross, as he endeavors to safeguard his family following a catastrophic nuclear attack. McDonough, who has previously appeared in shows like “Yellowstone” as Malcolm Beck, “Tulsa King” as Cal Thresher, and “Minority Report” as Officer Fletcher, stars in this latest project. Inspired by the book “Black Autumn” by Jeff Kirkham and Jason Ross, “Homestead” was released on December 20 by Angel Studios, the same distributor behind “Sound of Freedom”.

Deadline reports that in its second weekend, the thriller continues to underperform. It’s being shown in fewer than 2,000 theaters across the country and has landed at No. 9 in the box office rankings. After experiencing a 66% drop on Friday, it’s projected to earn a total of just $3 million over the three-day period and $5.2 million during the five-day holiday weekend. This brings its cumulative domestic earnings so far to a mere $12.7 million.

What these box office results mean for “Homestead” is that the movie still has a shot at achieving success. While the numbers have been disappointing, they’re actually quite respectable when weighed against its budget. “Homestead” reportedly had a production budget of only $8 million and a limited marketing push, which makes profitability a real and even likely outcome. Generally, a movie needs to make around 2.5 times its budget to be considered successful, which in this case would be $20 million. After two weeks, reaching $20 million is still within the realm of possibility, and with a relatively small marketing budget, the bar for success could be even lower, not even factoring in potential international earnings.

Movies typically require 2.5 times their budget to cover marketing expenses and the share that theaters take from the overall profits. “Homestead” mainly relied on clips and trailers for its marketing, so there could still be significant costs involved. However, it’s entirely possible that it will end its run with a decent total. Moreover, it could find success when it makes its way to streaming platforms. If it can attract audiences through a favorable streaming deal, it can make up for any shortfalls at the box office. With the growing prominence of streaming, studios are reevaluating box office expectations, and this movie stands to benefit from that shift.

“Homestead’s” box office performance was quickly overshadowed by fierce competition. Nobody anticipated that “Homestead” would be a blockbuster, especially with major releases like “Wicked”, “Mufasa”, “Sonic 3”, and “Nosferatu” currently dominating theaters. Had it premiered earlier in the year, it might have had a better chance of succeeding. As things stand, though, it’s struggling to draw much attention. The movie is set to have an international debut in Brazil in March, where it could potentially see an improvement in its performance. For now, it seems likely that “Homestead” will continue to see only modest results at the box office.
