‘John Stamos’ : Almost the Grinch in 2000 Adaptation

by Barbara Miller

In a surprising revelation, John Stamos has shared that he was nearly cast as the titular character in Ron Howard’s 2000 live-action adaptation of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. This holiday-season release was a live-action reimagining of the much-loved children’s book by Dr. Seuss and was the second adaptation following the iconic 1966 animated TV special. The movie turned out to be a significant box office hit, with Jim Carrey earning widespread acclaim for his transformation into the grouchy yet endearing Grinch. He even received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.

During an interview on Wondery’s ‘Tis The Grinch Holiday Podcast (via Rolling Stone), the “Full House” star disclosed that he had undergone early makeup tests for the role. However, he had to pass on the opportunity due to an allergic reaction to the prosthetics used for the character. As a result, the lead role went to Carrey instead. Here’s what Stamos said:

“Here’s an interesting fact you don’t know about me. I was originally going to play [The Grinch] in the movie that Jim Carrey got. I went to the makeup test, and I was allergic to all the prosthetics.”

What this means for the casting of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is that it provides an unexpected look into the film’s creative process. Makeup and prosthetics were essential in bringing the Grinch to life, demanding that the actor not only endure a challenging transformation but also capture the character’s larger-than-life energy and complex personality. While Carrey’s portrayal of the Grinch is well-remembered and cherished by audiences, the idea of another actor potentially taking on the role highlights the difficulties in casting such an eccentric character.

Ultimately, the decision to cast Jim Carrey shows the thought that went into choosing someone who could fully embody the character. Known for his comedic versatility, Carrey’s performance was a perfect fit for the Grinch’s personality and helped make the movie a holiday classic. Similar to his recent role as Dr. Robotnik in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”, his talent for playing over-the-top and memorable characters continues to engage viewers.

Interestingly, Stamos wasn’t the only one who struggled with the prosthetics for the role. Carrey himself had issues as well. He once recalled spending up to two-and-a-half-hours each day having the makeup and prosthetics applied, and he could “hardly breathe” under it all. Moreover, with the young audiences in mind for whom the movie was being made, he’s since stated that if “The Grinch 2” were ever to be made, he’d prefer it to be done using motion capture instead of practical effects.

John Stamos almost becoming The Grinch that he could have brought his own distinct sense of humor to the character. Stamos’ near involvement in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is an intriguing addition to the film’s history. While it’s hard to envision anyone other than Carrey as the Grinch, it’s fun to consider how the character’s antics might have differed with a different comedic touch. Stamos’ story serves as another reminder of how casting decisions can significantly shape the stories we adore, often in unexpected ways.
