Robert Pattinson’s ‘Mickey 17’ Gets Fifth Release Date Shift

by Barbara Miller

Robert Pattinson’s “Mickey 17”, a quirky science fiction comedy, has seen yet another alteration to its release date, and this time it’s arriving a bit earlier than previously planned. Based on Edward Ashton’s book “Mickey7”, which envisions a future world where human bodies can be regenerated after death, allowing for a kind of perpetual life with most memories intact, the movie adaptation directed by Oscar-winning Bong Joon-Ho has an interesting premise. In it, Pattinson plays an “expendable” character whose space-faring life of endless reboots hits a snag when one of his supposedly deceased iterations turns out to be alive and confronts his successor.

Warner Bros. has announced that “Mickey 17” will now be released on March 7, 2025, which is over a month earlier than its previous release date of April 18. The film has swapped its release slot with another WB project, Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners”.

What this means for “Mickey 17” is that it appears its release date shuffle might finally be coming to an end. The movie was first revealed to be in development back in January 2022, marking Bong’s first feature film since his critically acclaimed and Oscar-dominating “Parasite”. After Pattinson was cast, production began on August 2, 2022, and concluded in December of that year. Initially, Warner Bros. had slated “Mickey 17” for a March 29, 2024 release, but due to the 2023 strikes, the studio removed it from the release calendar indefinitely.

Later, January 31, 2025 was announced as the new release date, though in November of this year, it was shifted again to April 18, 2025. With this latest change to March 7, 2025, the film will now be sharing the weekend with the drama “Rule Breakers” and the animated “Night of the Zoopocalypse”, neither of which are expected to pose significant competition.

“Mickey 17’s” latest release date change will finally hit theaters over two years after wrapping production. It’s not uncommon for a movie’s release date to change, especially considering the disruptions caused by COVID and the 2023 strikes in recent years. “Mickey 17” was affected by both the strikes and post-production and editing issues, as confirmed by director Bong himself.

The movie also stars Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Holliday Grainger. While the delays might seem concerning, they don’t necessarily spell doom for the film. Just look at Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick”, which was shelved for around two years due to COVID as Cruise fought for a theatrical release instead of it going straight to streaming. That movie went on to gross over $1 billion worldwide. “Mickey 17” likely won’t achieve such massive success, but it’s not doomed to failure just because of its release date changes. The reasons behind the delays seem reasonable, and now it has what appears to be a solid release date set.
