Warner Bros. has officially announced the release date for Tom Cruise’s forthcoming apocalyptic movie that will follow the release of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” on May 23, 2025. The as-yet-untitled film, which is being produced and directed by the four-time Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu, has a script co-written by Iñárritu, along with Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris from “Birdman”, and Sabina Berman. Filming is said to have commenced in the U.K. in November.
Cruise’s untitled apocalyptic project now has a set release date from Warner Bros., slated to hit theaters on October 2nd, 2026, specifically in IMAX. Cruise and Mary Parent are listed as producers. The movie boasts an impressive cast including Sandra Huller (“The Anatomy of a Fall”), John Goodman (“Monsters, Inc.”), Michael Stuhlbarg (“Men in Black 3”), Jesse Plemons (“Civil War”), Sophie Wilde (“Talk to Me”), and Riz Ahmed (“Venom”). The logline describes how the story follows “the most powerful man in the world” on a “frantic mission” to rescue humanity from a disaster that he himself has set in motion.
What this means for Cruise fans is that his career shows no signs of losing steam. Cruise and his production company inked a new deal with Warner Bros. in January 2024 to produce and develop both original and franchise-based movies. The upcoming film with Iñárritu is just one of several projects in the pipeline. After the much-anticipated “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”, Cruise is set to collaborate once again with Christopher McQuarrie on a project titled “Broadsword”, an epic World War II movie expected to start production in the summer of 2025.
Moreover, Cruise is anticipated to reprise his lead role in “Top Gun 3”, joining Miles Teller and Glen Powell. Development on this sequel to the box office smash “Top Gun: Maverick” began in January 2024. Powell has even hinted at a potential production date for filming. Clearly, Cruise is maintaining a busy schedule, and his upcoming apocalyptic film, which falls within the action genre like many of his other projects, indicates where his focus will lie in the coming years.
Tom Cruise’s upcoming films is been a decade since he starred in a sci-fi movie. His last apocalypse-themed role was in 2014’s “Edge of Tomorrow”, where he played Major William Cage on a suicidal mission to break free from a time loop alongside Emily Blunt. While there’s speculation about whether “Mission: Impossible” will conclude with its eighth installment, with mixed reports on a possible ninth film in development, Cruise has the potential to dominate the box office in the next few years with a diverse range of projects spanning from period drama to spy and sci-fi films. Given his reputation for taking on impossible missions, this upcoming apocalyptic movie seems to align perfectly with what fans have come to expect from the action icon.
