SONY CEO Blames Media for ‘The Huntsman Craven’ Failures

by Barbara Miller

The film “The Huntsman Craven”, was released on December 11, marks the final installment in SONY’s “Spider-Man spin-off universe”. However, its performance so far has been rather lackluster. Globally, it has only managed to rake in $44.562 million at the box office, which is a far cry from its hefty $110 million production budget. In terms of critical reception, the movie has fared poorly as well, sporting a meager 17% Rotten Tomatoes freshness rating, only slightly better than “Spider Lady” (with an 11% rating) within the Spider-Man spinoff universe.

Outgoing SONY Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra addressed the film’s underwhelming box office and word-of-mouth results in an interview. He noted that while much of his career has been quite successful, “The Huntsman Craven” can be considered one of the poorest performers during his tenure. “I still don’t understand why,” he stated, adding that he doesn’t think it’s a bad movie and also defended “Spider Lady” in a similar vein.

Vinciquerra went on to lay the blame for the failures of both “Spider Lady” and “The Huntsman Craven” at the feet of the media and critics. He claimed that, for reasons unknown to him, they seemingly didn’t want these films to succeed and thus damaged their prospects through media coverage. When discussing the “Spider-Man spin-off universe” strategy that has been in progress over the past several years, he expressed doubts, stating that the strategy needs to be reevaluated. “This strategy is already doomed to misfortune. Even if new content is introduced, it will be destroyed, good or bad,” he said. This assertion by the CEO highlights the significant challenges and potential missteps that SONY Pictures has faced in its attempts to expand the Spider-Man franchise through spin-offs and raises questions about the future direction of such endeavors.

The comments from Vinciquerra have sparked debate within the industry, with many wondering whether the media truly holds such sway over a film’s success or if there were inherent flaws in the movies themselves that contributed to their poor showings. As SONY Pictures looks ahead, it will undoubtedly need to carefully consider how to move forward with its franchise-building efforts, taking into account the lessons learned from the experiences of films like “The Huntsman Craven” and “Spider Lady”.
