In exciting news for fans of the beloved show “Community”, star Ken Jeong has shared his thoughts on the long-awaited script for “Community: The Movie”. Back in 2022, it was announced that a movie based on the series was in development for Peacock, with the show’s original creator, Dan Harmon, penning the script. The anticipation has been high as it’s expected that much of the main cast will return, including Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong himself, who played the memorable Spanish teacher at Greendale Community College, Ben Chang.
During an interview with TV Insider while promoting his appearance on Fox’s “Accused”, Jeong opened up about reading the script. Although he couldn’t disclose many details about the movie itself due to restrictions, he did reveal that the experience was an emotional one for him. Reading the script made him feel as if he was transported back to the days of filming the show. Here are his full comments:
“There is a script, there is a plan. We just don’t know when [it will happen]. Once that’s agreed upon, it’ll be magical and real emotional. I think being on set experiencing that again [will be] so gratifying. Words can’t even express. It is funny. I got to meet one of my best friends, Joel McHale, because of that [show]. It made me emotional, and just brought me right back, and that’s all I’m legally allowed to say.”
What Jeong’s comments mean for the “Community” movie is that its timeline remains uncertain. The project has had a bumpy ride since its announcement in 2022. Originally slated to start shooting in June 2023, it faced a setback due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that summer. Even after the strikes concluded, progress has been slow, partly because of the limited availability of the cast members.
The development process of the movie has been somewhat convoluted. Dan Harmon’s script took longer than anticipated to finalize. In February 2024, Donald Glover stated that the script was completed, yet later that same month, Harmon clarified that it was actually “almost done”. Jeong’s remarks, coming nine months later, seem to suggest that the script is now truly finished and that there is a plan in place. However, there’s still no definite schedule for when production will kick off.
Ken Jeong’s comments regarding the “Community” movie present a mixed picture. On one hand, it’s positive that the script is apparently done and there’s a plan in the works. This gives hope to fans who have been eagerly waiting for the movie to materialize. On the other hand, the lack of a clear timeline for starting production is a cause for concern. With the need to align the schedules of the busy cast members before filming can commence, there are still several hurdles to overcome before “Community: The Movie” can finally become a reality.
