Ralph Fiennes has opened up about how he delved into the mindset and crafted the characterization of the infamous Voldemort in the Harry Potter movie series. Fiennes made his first appearance as the Dark Lord in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”, when Voldemort regained his physical form, and went on to play the role throughout the remainder of the series. Despite joining the franchise relatively late, Fiennes delivered a performance that stands out as one of the most memorable among the entire Harry Potter cast, firmly establishing Voldemort as an iconic and truly terrifying villain.
In an interview, Fiennes shared insights into how he managed to bring to life a character like Voldemort, who is completely devoid of empathy. He emphasized the intense pleasure that Voldemort derives from being able to manipulate and dominate others, bending them to his will. Fiennes also described how satisfied Voldemort is in knowing the full extent of his formidable power and having the means to unleash his evil. Here’s what he had to say:
“When I play Voldemort, I’m trying to access something without empathy. It’s about power and control and the manipulating of people for power. It’s a real, almost erotic pleasure in how I can control you. I know I have the power to do it. You have no chance.”
What this means for the Harry Potter series is significant. From his dramatic and terrifying introduction in the graveyard scene of “Goblet of Fire”, Fiennes’ portrayal of Voldemort was instantly impactful. The “almost erotic pleasure” he described was palpable as Voldemort relished having his body back, tormented Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), and summoned the Death Eaters. His performance made the horror of Voldemort’s return feel all too real and heightened the excitement for the movies that followed.
In the subsequent sequels, Fiennes’ performance remained just as strong. As Voldemort continued to take pleasure in growing more powerful, he ultimately met his downfall due to his inability to learn from his mistakes. While some characters in the Harry Potter adaptations differ in their on-screen and written portrayals, it’s nearly impossible to envision Voldemort without picturing Fiennes and hearing the chilling voice he gave to the villain. He truly grasped that Voldemort lacked empathy entirely, and his performance embodied this aspect flawlessly, leaving an indelible mark on the beloved movie franchise.
