Jason Momoa in Talks for Lobo Role in DCU, Set for 2026 Supergirl

by Barbara Miller

Over a year after the conclusion of the Aquaman franchise, Jason Momoa’s return to the DC Universe in what could be a dream role has seemingly been confirmed. With James Gunn’s reboot of the DC franchise now underway, the line-up of actors bringing the Justice League to life is undergoing changes. As a result, Momoa, who previously played Aquaman, was left without that role. However, it appears that he may have another significant part waiting for him in DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

On his personal Instagram account, Momoa provided evidence that talks are taking place between him and DC Studios. He shared an old news snippet where he had previously expressed his eagerness to play Lobo, a DC character he’s long been fan-cast as. In the past, Momoa had stated that if DC were to call him about taking on the role of Lobo, his answer would be an immediate yes. But at that time, he hadn’t received such a call. Now, by reposting that snippet with the caption “They called”, Momoa has signaled that his return to DC as Lobo is a real possibility. It has further reported that his debut in this role will be in 2026’s “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”.

What Momoa’s Lobo post signifies is quite straightforward: the actor is engaged in discussions to portray the character within the DC Universe. His post confirms that James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-heads of DC Studios, have reached out to him specifically regarding the role of Lobo. Since the DC Universe reboot was announced, Gunn had mentioned the intention to find a suitable role for Momoa, given his outstanding performance as Aquaman in the DCEU.

While it had been theorized that Lobo would be the role for Momoa, official confirmation had been lacking until now. His post reveals that the role he’s long desired is finally on the table from DC Studios, which also raises questions about which other upcoming DCU projects will feature this character beyond “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”. It’s likely that Gunn, who is active on social media, will address Momoa’s casting as Lobo soon, potentially unveiling more storylines centered around the intergalactic bounty hunter.

Jason Momoa playing Lobo in the DCU is an excellent choice. It’s hardly a surprise to anyone as the actor and the character bear a striking resemblance. Momoa has often stated that this, combined with his familiarity with the DC character, makes the role a perfect fit for him. While many loved him as Aquaman, there was always a desire to see him take on a darker role, and Lobo presents just that opportunity.

As an intergalactic bounty hunter, Lobo would offer Momoa more creative freedom compared to what he had with the character of Aquaman. If he makes his debut in “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”, there’s great potential for him to have engaging on-screen chemistry with Milly Alcock’s Supergirl. All in all, this casting seems like a winning move. Momoa has always been dedicated to the roles and stories he’s been part of in the DCEU, and it looks like that commitment could continue in the DCU with a character that appears tailor-made for him.
