Ana De Armas on How Her ‘Ballerina’ Character Differs from John Wick

by Barbara Miller

In the upcoming “Ballerina”, a John Wick spinoff, Ana de Armas is set to shine as Eve Macarro, a female assassin seeking revenge for her father’s death. This film marks the first feature film spinoff within the John Wick franchise, which already consists of four movies and had a spinoff television series in “The Continental”. The movie boasts a star-studded cast with de Armas in the lead, Keanu Reeves reprising his role as John Wick, and support from the likes of Norman Reedus, Ian McShane, and Anjelica Houston.

During an interview, de Armas delved into how her character in “Ballerina” stands apart from John Wick. She first acknowledged the similarities, noting that “there are some trademarks in the style of the fights in John Wick”, highlighting elements that are characteristic of the franchise’s action sequences. However, she emphasized that “Ballerina” is firmly rooted in Eve’s perspective, showing “the background of that training that John had”. De Armas made it clear that “Eve Macarro is Eve Macarro. She’s not John Wick”, stressing the individuality of her character.

What this means for “Ballerina” is that it’s set to be a distinct entity from the John Wick films. Based on the trailer and initial publicity, one might assume it’s just a female-led version of the Wick movies. But with Eve being different from John, as de Armas stated, that won’t be the case. This differentiation could be a positive change for some viewers who might have been concerned about a lack of originality in the spinoff.

The most obvious connection between “Ballerina” and the rest of the John Wick franchise seems to be in its style. While the choreography is likely to change without Chad Stahelski, who helmed the previous movies and was responsible for the iconic gun-fu-style fighting that contributed to their success, de Armas did mention that there are some fight style “trademarks” carried over. So, “Ballerina” aims to retain some key stylistic aspects of the franchise.

The similarities and differences between “Ballerina” and the John Wick films is a delicate balance. Historically, female assassin movies haven’t fared well at the box office, like the 2020 flop “The Rhythm Section”. Even as a John Wick spinoff, “Ballerina” might face challenges due to this trend. As Eve distances herself from John’s leading man persona, it’ll be interesting to see if these differences prove beneficial or detrimental to the film. While it’s good to have a unique identity, straying too far from the John Wick formula could risk losing the franchise’s fan base.
