MCU Star’s ‘The Time Machine’ Earns Praise 22 Years Later

by Barbara Miller

H.G. Wells, a pioneer of science fiction in the English literary world, has had his imaginative works frequently brought to the silver screen since the 1930s. Early adaptations like “Island of Lost Souls” (1932), “The Invisible Man” (1933), “Things to Come” (1936), and “The Man Who Could Work Miracles” (1937) enthralled audiences with their groundbreaking special effects, merging the author’s thought-provoking themes with cinematic grandeur.

As time went on, subsequent adaptations continued to breathe life into Wells’ visionary stories, often mirroring contemporary concerns. “The War of the Worlds” (1953) captured Cold War fears, while “The Time Machine” (1960) delved into the fascination with time travel. Remakes over the years, such as different versions of “The Island of Dr. Moreau” (1977, 1996), Steven Spielberg’s “War of the Worlds” (2005) starring Tom Cruise, and the visually updated “The Time Machine” (2002), offered new takes on the author’s themes, almost always accompanied by impressive visual effects.

Now, 22 years after its release, “The Time Machine” (2002) is getting a glowing review from VFX artists. Loosely based on Wells’ 1895 novel and directed by Simon Wells, the author’s great-grandson, this film features MCU star Guy Pearce as a 19th-century inventor. In a bid to change the past, he travels 800,000 years into the future, only to find humanity split into two warring factions. The movie also includes Orlando Jones, Samantha Mumba, Mark Addy, Jeremy Irons, and even has a cameo from Alan Young, who starred in the 1960 adaptation.
