In the 2024 film “A Complete Unknown”, director James Mangold has addressed the reason behind not having Joaquin Phoenix reprise his role as Johnny Cash. The movie follows the journey of a 19-year-old Bob Dylan (played by Timothée Chalamet) as he arrives in New York City in the early 1960s and begins his rapid ascent to fame, transforming into a musical icon. Back in 2005, Mangold directed “Walk the Line”, which depicted the life of Johnny Cash, with Phoenix in the lead role. In “A Complete Unknown”, Cash does make an appearance, but this time, it’s Narcos actor Boyd Holbrook who takes on the part.
During an interview, Mangold shared that he did consider bringing Phoenix back to play Cash. However, he quickly realized that Phoenix, now 50 years old, would have to portray a character who was in his 20s or 30s. Mangold stated, “The thought occurred to me. But then I realized he’d be 20 – 30 years too old to be playing the part.” He further elaborated on why he didn’t opt to use de-aging technology or makeup, saying:
“Okay, but then what am I servicing? This kind of meta-movie universe stuff that has plagued us enough? I’m a big fan of making a movie and giving the public the movie. Don’t try to suture the movie to another movie, just own it. Otherwise movies just become this hyper-expensive television series in which we never stop making new episodes every couple of years.”
What Mangold’s casting decision means for “A Complete Unknown” is that it helps the movie stand on its own. His choices in casting reflect a dedication to grounding the film in a historical context rather than creating a shared universe by linking it to previous works. By choosing not to have Phoenix reprise his role as Cash, Mangold reinforces the film’s independent identity. This allows for fresh interpretations of well-known figures like Johnny Cash, as seen in Holbrook’s portrayal in relation to Dylan.
Moreover, Mangold’s decision to avoid de-aging technology showcases the production team’s commitment to accurately depicting Dylan’s story. CGI de-aging has often faced criticism for looking artificial, with many viewers finding the results rather strange. His choice not to rely on such techniques gives priority to a more genuine portrayal of the characters. It also emphasizes the natural progression of their lives and careers, making the story feel more organic and unforced.
For Dylan’s overall narrative, casting a younger actor to play Cash introduces a visual and thematic consistency that’s vital for depicting the early 1960s. These choices ensure that the story’s focus stays on Dylan’s relationships, which are a key aspect of the film’s plot, rather than being overshadowed by comparisons to Phoenix’s previous portrayal.
Mangold’s vision for this Bob Dylan biopic made the right call in casting Holbrook. His decision shows respect for Dylan’s story and a commitment to artistic integrity. By emphasizing authenticity and historical accuracy over familiarity, “A Complete Unknown” positions itself as a carefully crafted account of Dylan’s life and career. Mangold’s approach could potentially reshape how interconnected narratives are handled in biographical filmmaking.
