Missing You Author’s Surprising Reaction to Netflix Show’s Finale

by Barbara Miller

Harlan Coben, the author of “Missing You”, has shared his emotional response to the finale of the Netflix adaptation of his work. “Missing You” premiered one year after Coben’s “Fool Me Once” dominated streaming charts. This new series focuses on a detective who experiences the loss of the love of her life and is based on Coben’s 2014 novel of the same name. The adaptation stars Rosalind Eleazar from “Slow Horses”, along with an ensemble cast including Ashley Walters, Jessica Plummer, and Richard Armitage.

In an interview, Coben disclosed that the new Netflix show elicited a strong emotional reaction from him. As an executive producer on the series, he noted that while “Fool Me Once” did stir some feelings in him, the latest adaptation had him more emotionally invested than ever. He said, “This is the most emotional ending that I’ve experienced. When I watched episode 5, I actually cried. I think I had a little bit of a tear in my eye maybe with Fool Me Once also. But I think this will be the most emotional series.”

What occurs in “Missing You” and what its ending implies is that there’s a significant focus on relationships that truly pays off. The mystery thriller centers around Detective Kat Donovan (played by Eleazar). Eleven years ago, her fiancé vanished, and she hadn’t heard from him since. By chance, when she was swiping on a dating app, she was shocked to see his face. This apparent reappearance of her fiancé compels the detective to investigate her father’s murder and unearth secrets from the past, all of which culminate in a finale with surprising twists.

The focus on the characters elevates the show beyond being just a convoluted thriller. It turns out that the two men in Kate’s life are connected. Her fiancé, Josh (played by Walters), was the one who killed her father, Clint (Lenny Henry). Clint was a corrupt cop living a double life, though the death was accidental. Josh left because he couldn’t bear the secret and lying to Kate.

With a cast that also includes Steve Pemberton, Marc Warren, and Samantha Spiro, the five-episode miniseries devotes time to exploring how Kate copes with all the uncertainty and secrecy in her life. The emphasis on character development enables the show to transcend the typical trappings of a thriller, as the impact on Kate and those she loves is clearly evident, allowing the cast to delve deeper than just the surface-level, soapy elements. This is largely due to the strength of Eleazar’s lead performance.

“Missing You’s” ending is the MVP. She’s also excellent in her supporting role on the Apple TV+ spy dramedy “Slow Horses”, where there’s a comedic aspect to her performance. However, “Missing You” fully embraces emotion and positions Eleazar at the center. Thanks to her, the adaptation’s twists and turns don’t veer into melodrama but instead have a genuine emotional impact.
