Shailene Woodley and Iain Armitage, who starred as Jane Chapman and her son Ziggy respectively in the hit HBO series “Big Little Lies”, have reunited. Despite the show having already surpassed its source material and the seemingly conclusive ending of season 2, Nicole Kidman has confirmed that “Big Little Lies” season 3 is in development. Reese Witherspoon has also indicated her involvement in its development, and HBO executive Casey Bloys has verified that it’s in the early stages.
On Instagram, Armitage posted a photo of him and Woodley together, taken after he went to watch Woodley perform in her Broadway debut play, “Cult of Love”. In the post, Armitage affectionately refers to Woodley as his “first fake Mama”, as he filmed “Big Little Lies” season 1 before starting on “Young Sheldon” season 1. He also reminisces about how encouraging and supportive Woodley was of his acting career when he was first cast in “Big Little Lies” at just 7 years old.
What this reunion means for “Big Little Lies” is that a reunion between Jane and Ziggy in season 3 would be a welcome addition. Although season 3 is still in its nascent development phase, it’s exciting to see key cast members remaining close and supporting one another’s careers. Given the events at the end of season 2, where Jane and the other members of the Monterey Five went to the police station and presumably turned themselves in, a reunion in season 3 might involve Ziggy visiting his mother in prison.
Previously, Woodley had suggested that instead of centering on the Monterey Five, season 3 could focus more on the younger generation. Since Armitage started “Big Little Lies” season 1 before “Young Sheldon”, he has made significant progress in his career. The same goes for Kathryn Newton and Cameron Crovetti, two other young actors from the show who have since landed major roles in other movies and TV series.
The reunion between Shailene Woodley and Iain Armitage is a heartwarming sight and a positive sign for the future of the series. It’s especially touching considering the reason for their get-together was Armitage supporting Woodley’s Broadway debut. For the HBO series’ future, seeing Jane and Ziggy together again seems like an essential item on the wishlist for “Big Little Lies” season 3. While Woodley’s idea of spotlighting the younger generation has potential, regardless of whether Ziggy becomes a more prominent character than Jane, a reunion between mother and son in season 3 would be a fitting and much-anticipated element.
