Disney+ Revives Classic with Gender-Swapped TV Adaptation of Holes

by Barbara

Disney+ is set to bring a fresh spin to its 2003 movie adaptation of Holes, the beloved 1998 novel by Louis Sachar. The streaming platform is developing a TV series based on the book, which first captivated audiences with its quirky characters and mysterious desert detention camp.

The original 2003 film featured a star-studded cast, including Shia LaBeouf, Khleo Thomas, Patricia Arquette, Sigourney Weaver, and Jon Voight. However, this new version promises a significant twist: the central character will be reimagined as a teenage girl, shifting the dynamic of the story while keeping the core mystery intact.

Liz Phang will serve as showrunner and executive producer, with Alina Mankin joining her as writer and co-executive producer. The new series will stay true to the novel’s premise but with updated, gender-swapped elements. The story will follow a teenage girl sent to a brutal detention camp, where the sinister Warden forces campers to dig holes for an undisclosed purpose.

Drew Goddard, one of the executive producers, shared his personal connection to the project in a recent interview. “My mom’s been a schoolteacher for her whole life and, as such, she’s served as a de facto book scout for Goddard Textiles,” he explained. “She always knows what ‘the kids’ are into long before everyone else does. Holes was the first book she suggested to me – this was back in the late ‘90s – and she was positive it was going to be a phenomenon. It feels good to bring it full circle for Mrs. Goddard and her sixth grade class.”

Goddard also praised the new adaptation, stating, “They’ve done a wonderful job capturing Louis Sachar’s unique spirit.” He hinted that the team had exciting developments planned but cautioned, “To say much more about what they have in store would spoil all the fun.”

The TV adaptation of Holes is already generating buzz, as Disney+ continues to explore new adaptations of classic stories, bringing them into the modern age with fresh perspectives.
