Mac Miller’s Balloonerism Album and Film Set for Release

by Barbara

The highly anticipated posthumous album Balloonerism from late rapper Mac Miller is slated for release on January 17, 2025, alongside a captivating short film of the same name. This marks Miller’s second posthumous project since his untimely passing in 2018.

The Balloonerism album has been the subject of fan speculation for over a decade, with many wondering about its release following its initial creation during the production of Miller’s 2013 album Watching Movies with the Sound Off and its related mixtapes Delusional Thomas and Faces. Fans were given a glimpse of the record’s potential during a trailer debut at the Camp Flog Gnaw festival in November. A teaser for the project was shared last week with the release of its lead single, “5 Dollar Pony Rides,” which was produced with the help of Miller’s close collaborator Thundercat.

The accompanying animated short film, also titled Balloonerism, brings Miller’s music to life through a surreal narrative. Directed by Samuel Jerome Mason, the film follows a group of school friends who are transported into a shadow world after being enchanted by the sound of a chord organ. “Swallowed by the turtle of time, they must plod through the underbelly of adulthood,” reads the film’s synopsis.

Fans across the U.S. will get an early taste of the visual experience when the short film premieres on January 15, while international audiences can access it the following day. Additionally, special “One Night Only” advance screenings will be held in cities such as New York, Pittsburgh, and various locations worldwide, including in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Ireland, France, Canada, and the U.K.

Tickets for the film will be available at a modest price of $5 (or the equivalent in international markets), in line with the album’s lead single. This pricing structure echoes the themes present in the album, tying into the song’s lyrics and the overall ethos of Balloonerism.

As fans eagerly await the official release of Balloonerism, the project is expected to highlight Mac Miller’s dynamic musical abilities and his boundary-pushing approach to artistry. The rapper had previously expressed his desire to release the album, making its posthumous debut all the more meaningful for both his family and his fans.
