GKIDS, in partnership with Shout! Studios, will release the highly anticipated anime feature Ghost Cat Anzu on Blu-ray starting March 4. The Blu-ray edition will include a variety of bonus features, such as teasers and trailers, providing fans with exclusive content. Additionally, the film will be available for digital purchase across major platforms, including Amazon, Apple, Google, Fandango, Microsoft, and iNDEMAND, beginning January 28.
Ghost Cat Anzu tells the story of Karin, a young girl who is left abandoned by her father in a rural Japanese town. Moving in with her grandfather at a local temple, Karin soon encounters Anzu, a colossal, lazy “ghost cat” tasked with caring for her. Initially skeptical of her new guardian, Karin sabotages Anzu’s attempts at helping the villagers and strikes up friendships with the quirky forest spirits of the area. However, when Anzu inadvertently strikes a deal with the devil to gain Karin’s trust, chaos ensues, leading to an uproar of supernatural consequences.
The film is unique in its production, having been initially filmed in live-action with animation rotoscoped from the footage. Co-directed by Yôko Kuno, marking her feature directorial debut, alongside Nobuhiro Yamashita (known for Linda Linda Linda), Ghost Cat Anzu was co-produced by Shin-Ei Animation and Miyu Productions. The music for the film was composed by Keiichi Suzuki, renowned for his work on EarthBound.
Having wrapped its U.S. theatrical run late last year, Ghost Cat Anzu was also featured as one of 10 animated projects from Miyu at the prestigious 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
