Marvel Zombies Animated Series Set to Premiere on Disney+ in October

by Barbara

Marvel’s iconic undead twist is returning to the screen, this time in the form of an animated series set to premiere on Disney+ on October 3. The series, an extension of the Marvel Zombies concept first introduced in Robert Kirkman’s 2005 limited series, builds on the success of the “What If…?” episode that captivated fans with its zombie apocalypse take on the Marvel Universe.

Showrunner Bryan Andrews revealed that the popularity of the “What If…?” episode led to an expanded format. “Brad (Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Television and Marvel Animation) and Kevin (Feige, President of Marvel Studios) loved the What If…? episode so much. They were like, ‘We need more zombies!’” Andrews said. “So, we decided to do a sequel with four episodes, creating a mini-movie event. With it being TV-MA, we don’t have to hold back—we can push the envelope and make it more intense.”

Winderbaum further emphasized the creative freedom offered by animation, noting, “Animation provides the clearest route to manifest a filmmaker’s imagination. If you can visualize it, you can create it on screen. Marvel Zombies isn’t just about zombies; it’s a sweeping adventure filled with themes of hope and despair—elements that are vital to a compelling zombie narrative.”

The star-studded voice cast includes Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Awkwafina (Katy), Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff), David Harbour (Red Guardian), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Randall Park (Jimmy Woo), Hailee Steinfeld (Kate Bishop), Dominique Thorne (Riri Williams), Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan), and Todd Williams, among others. The series will also feature notable characters from the Marvel Universe, including zombie versions of Clint Barton, Steve Rogers, and Carol Danvers, alongside fan-favorites like Ikaris and Okoye.

Additionally, the series will introduce a new twist on Blade, who will appear as both Blade and Moon Knight, with the latter being the avatar for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, in a unique “What If…?” scenario.

The release of Marvel Zombies in October marks the latest installment in Marvel Animation’s expanding lineup, which includes the finale of What If…?, a second season of X-Men ‘97, and upcoming series like Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (January 29) and Eyes of Wakanda (August 6). Marvel Zombies promises to bring the undead back to life with thrilling new adventures.
